Sea of Tranquility will be Mandel's sixth novel. Her most recent, The Glass Hotel, was a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize and selected by President Barack Obama as a favourite book of 2020. "There is also an author living on a moon colony who visits Earth on a book tour." "There is, of course, a time traveller in it," said Mandel. The novel traverses time, space and reality, introducing a wide range of characters living in British Columbia in 1912 and on the moon in 2401. "This is the kind of book that happens when you're working in a soundscape of constant ambulance sirens," said Mandel in a press release.Īccording to the book's publisher, HarperCollins Canada, Sea of Tranquility "is a remarkable feat of storytelling that delves into themes that will be familiar to Mandel's many readers - time, art, love, wilderness, what makes the world real - and introduces readers to a remarkable cast of characters." Mandel wrote the book over the course of the pandemic, trapped in New York City for the entirety of 2020.
